During this visit, we crossed paths with many national celebrities. Some were as good as angels, and some were more on the devil’s side: Thomas Paine, Joseph Grimaldi, Boris Johnson, Joe Orton, Caroline Chisholm, Charlie Chaplin and more. The double face of Covent Garden

The double face of Covent Garden

This visit, conducted by our guide Muriel with brisk and positive energy, was as refreshing as the crisp air of the day! That day we crossed paths with old fields in the heart of the London theatrical scene - convents, churches, and sulphurous places of forbidden pleasures - aristocrats and vendors dealing at the famous Covent Garden market - performances of the Royal Opera or the Royal Drury Lane, as well as publications from the licentious best-seller “The Covent Garden Ladies” - St Martin-in-the-fields and St Giles-in-the-fields churches (special mention for the beautiful stained-glass window from Shirazeh Houshiary at St Martin-in-the-fields!) etc. Behind-the-scenes stories and a thousand and one facets of the turbulent and often hilarious history of Covent Garden have no more secrets for us!
